The Fontaine Classification

Doctors, like most scientists, like to classify things. Although at first sight  this might seem to complicate things, in fact it usually makes things much clearer. Here's why:

Provided the classification system which is used relates to how the disease progresses (or the severity of the disease) then the classification is really just a shorthand to communicate that the disease is - no problem, or mild, or severe or urgent!

The Fontaine classification system does this for blood flow to the legs and feet.

Fontaine Classification Description
1 - Normal No problem
2 - Claudication Pain in leg muscles on walking that gets better on resting
3 - Rest Pain Pain in feet at rest
4 - Tissue Loss Ulcers or gangrene
